This course will introduce Discourse Studies drawing upon different theoretical and methodological inspirations (Pragmatics, Cognitive linguistics, Phonetics, Corpus linguistics, Critical approaches). The list of the notions approached in this course will encompass methods of metaphor analysis, information structure across text types, genre and genre variation, strategies of legitimation and identity creation.
Every Session will focus on a specific topic in Discourse Analysis, and will be complemented by a set of key concepts and questions for comprehension to help students through their readings.
The first part of this course (first six weeks, taught by Maarten Lemmens), will touch upon the main notions of Discourse Analysis and its application on a wide variety of social issues, such as language and power, language and gender, language and identity. During the second part of this course (last six weeks, taught by Giuditta Caliendo) students will be asked to read a selection of scientific papers on the linguistic notions presented in the first part, engage in discussions and do a set of optional exercises (including quizzes) to contextualise, improve and test their knowledge.
Objectives :

reflect on strategies of manipulation of discourse in the media.
reflect on widespread discursive practices that perpetrate social discrimination and taboo;
reflect on the impact of words on concept formation;
learn qualitative and quantitative techniques for analysing and interpreting discursive practices across a variety of genres and settings.
